A guest bathroom doesn’t need to be enormous or extravagant to feel well prepared.
What matters far more is that the things a guest reasonably expects are clean, stocked, easy to find and ready before they have to ask.
A simple room-turnaround checklist can prevent many of the small frustrations that disproportionately affect the way a stay feels.
Here are seven things worth checking before every guest arrives.
1. Is there enough shampoo?
Start with the obvious.
Whether you use miniature bottles or refillable amenities, there needs to be enough shampoo for the number of guests and the expected length of stay.
For refillable bottles, don’t wait until a container is virtually empty before topping it up.
Establish a minimum refill level for housekeeping so the process is consistent from room to room.
2. Is there conditioner?
It sounds surprisingly basic, but conditioner is one of those amenities guests notice when it isn’t there.
If your property provides a coordinated bathroom toiletries range, shampoo and conditioner should ideally be treated as separate essentials rather than expecting guests to use one multipurpose product for everything.
It is a small detail that makes the bathroom feel considerably more considered.
3. Is there hand wash at the basin?
Guests should be able to wash their hands without looking around the bathroom for soap.
Place hand wash or soap exactly where it is naturally needed: beside the basin.
If you use a refillable dispenser, check that the pump works and that the bottle is clean and adequately filled.
4. Are the towels complete?
Don’t only check whether there are bath towels.
Think about how somebody will actually use the room.
Are there enough towels for the number of guests?
Is there a hand towel where it is needed?
Is the bath mat fresh?
Are all the towels clean, properly folded and in good condition?
These are mundane operational details until one is missing. Then they become part of the guest experience.
5. Can guests easily find spare toilet paper?
There should always be sufficient toilet paper for the stay, with at least one spare roll available.
Just as importantly, guests shouldn’t have to search through cupboards to find it.
Put practical essentials somewhere intuitive.
The best hospitality often feels effortless precisely because guests don’t have to work out where things are.
6. Are the promised extras there?
Different properties offer different amenities.
Your guest bathroom might include a shower cap, vanity kit, sanitary bag or dental kit. You may provide slippers, a laundry bag or additional bathroom accessories elsewhere in the room.
You don’t need to provide every possible amenity.
But if your property promises something, make sure it is actually there before check-in.
A simple housekeeping checklist can prevent these smaller items from being forgotten during a busy room turnaround.
7. Is everything clean, full and ready?
Finally, stop looking at the bathroom as the person who prepared it.
Look at it as the person arriving.
Are bottles facing the right way?
Are pumps clean?
Has anything been left almost empty?
Are there marks around the basin?
Does the bathroom smell fresh?
Is there something the guest will have to call reception or message the host to ask for?
Often the most useful final check isn’t “Have we cleaned the bathroom?”
It is:
“Does this bathroom feel ready for someone?”
Good hospitality is often invisible
Guests may never consciously notice that the shampoo bottle was full, the spare toilet roll was easy to find or the hand towel was precisely where they needed it.
That’s the point.
Well-prepared hospitality removes small points of friction before the guest encounters them.
You don’t need to fill a bathroom with unnecessary things.
You need to anticipate the right things.
If the guest has to ask for it, consider whether you could have anticipated it.
